Idiopathic Hemifacial Spasm constitutes a severe disability both from a cosmetic and psychological point of view and functionally for the daily life. Until recently this peculiar disease had remained enigmatous and was resistant to any kinds of treatments. Over the last two decades important advances have been made in the comprehension of its mechanisms and the efficacy of its treatment. Botulinic toxin revealed to be helpful although its effects are most often transient. Microvascular decompression – suppressing the neuro-vascular conflict almost constantly found at the root exit zone of the facial nerve from the brain stem – has been recognized as the curative treatment of this disease. A wide range of specialists, namely neurologists, ophthalmologists, ENT-surgeons, clinical neurophysiologists, neuroradiologists and of course neurosurgeons are involved in the diagnosis and the management of Hemifacial Spasm and will be interested in this multidisciplinary review of the topic.

BFS – also known as ‘muscle fasciculation syndrome’, ‘benign fasciculation’ and ‘fasciculation syndrome’ – is a disorder of the nervous system characterized by the uncontrolled twitching (fasciculation) of muscle groups in various parts of the body. It may or may not be associated with muscle cramps. Although it occurs more commonly in the muscles of the legs, arms and face, it can occur in any voluntary muscles, including those of the tongue. As its name suggests, it is a benign, somewhat irksome condition that, fortunately, does not progress to a more serious neurological disorder.

The fasciculation may be localized – a twitching eyelid for instance – or become far more extensive and involve several limbs or even the abdominal muscles. They may be either intermittent or continuous; in fact most people will experience a degree of BFS at sometime in their lives without realizing that they have this condition. For example, a simple facial ‘tic’ is a localized fasciculation.

However, most individuals will only be aware of the diagnosis of BFS when the symptoms become so widespread and persistent that they seek medical advice.

A more serious disease called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) – also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease also has muscle fasciculation as a dominant symptom. Although fasciculation is a feature of both BFS and ALS that of the former usually ceases when the affected muscle is exercised while the twitching in ALS patients persists whether the muscles are working or at rest. A diagnosis of BFS is usually made after a full neurological examination (including electromyography – EMG) has excluded other, more serious diseases.

Although the precise cause of BFS is unknown it may be associated with several factors including acute viral illnesses, exercise, anxiety or drugs. Some authorities have suggested that insecticides could also be a causative factor as muscle fasciculation is one of the prominent symptoms seen in organophosphate poisoning.

Exercise triggers muscle twitching in the majority of BFS patients that and is probably related to the higher than normal amounts of free radicals that are released by the body during prolonged exertion.

Free radicals are a by-product of the cell’s energy production therefore the longer and more intensely an individual exercises the more free radicals his body will produce. For this reason endurance athletes are subject to free radical overload and oxidative stress. If prolonged exercise is associated with BFS, in all likelihood the cause of the twitching is free radical-induced nerve and muscle excitability.

Although there are no recognized drugs for the treatment of BFS, anecdotal reports suggest that some individuals benefit from either pharmaceutical or natural sedatives. However no clinical trials have been done to show whether or not these products are more effective than placebos.

As prolonged physical activity produces large quantities of free radicals and exercise is such a strong precipitating factor for BFS, oxidative stress is almost certainly one of the underlying pathological factors contributing to this condition.

Therefore it is not surprising to find that there is reliable anecdotal evidence that antioxidant-rich food supplements are effective in treating this annoying, and often distressing, condition.

It is also possible that even those individuals who do not suffer from exercise induced BFS may be under oxidative stress for other reasons and could reduce their symptoms by increasing their daily antioxidant intake.

Dr Keith Scott is a medical doctor who used a spice supplement to cure himself of benign fasciculation syndrome (BFS). He has a special interest in nutrition and has written several books including the ground breaking, “Medicinal Seasonings, The Healing Power of Spices” and “Natural Home Pharmacy”.

How much does a hemifacial spasm surgery cost?

It depends, not only on the doctor's rates and the hospital's, but these are different types of the surgery that can be more difficult which raises the price. If you don't have insurance, I'd call a local hospital and ask to speak to a financial counselor about some type of low income assistance (they may write off 100% of the surgery) although I'm not sure if this surgery would be considered cosmetic which might change things. Be sure that you are calling a public hospital because they are much more likely to help you. Hope this helps to answer your question.

One of the most noticeable benefits of going to see a chiropractor is that they can often heal the spine without any need for invasive surgery or potentially dangerous prescription drugs.

Going to see a chiropractor is an ideal choice for anyone who doesn’t want to take powerful medications or spend a fortune on visits to the doctor. As you can no doubt imagine, there are several factors which can result in neck pain.

For example, the condition could simply be the result of poor posture, or because a person is often in a position where there is excessive strain placed on the neck. On the other hand, neck pain can also be caused by an injury, or even by a slipped or herniated disc. Whatever the reason, chiropractic services can usually establish what the root cause is after an in-depth examination of the spine has been carried out.

There are many ways in which a chiropractor can help to rid you of neck pain, although in most cases they will achieve this goal by using gentle manipulation. In layman’s terminology this is a simply a type of medical massage which is used in order to get the muscles surrounding the spine to relax sufficiently enough so that the spine can be manipulated. Not only can this help to alleviate muscle tension, but it can also help to correct conditions such as a pinched nerve.

Interestingly enough, neck pain can also often be treated with ultrasound and low frequency electrical currents, both of which help to stimulate and relax the muscles surrounding the spine. The good thing about this method is that not only is it completely safe, but it can also deliver both short and long term results. Contrary to what you may believe, injuries and vehicle accidents are not the leading cause of neck pain, but instead, poor alignment of the spine is. Let’s face it; the majority of people tend to have poor posture nowadays, and of course this is bound to cause problems, considering that the spine is designed to be correctly aligned. People who hunch over when they walk or sit are especially vulnerable, as are people who spend tons of hours on the phone each day.

As any chiropractor will attest to, their primary goal is to try and prevent these problems in order to avoid excessive treatments. Most chiropractic doctors will employ certain methods in order to try and educate people about back pain and neck pain. They do this so that people can take certain steps in order to avoid spinal problems, and of course if a problem does arise and it gets treated properly right from the start, the treatment usually proves to be highly successful.

Unfortunately however, neck pain cannot always be prevented, and in that case, chiropractic doctors are there to offer you a number of solutions which are not invasive, while at the same time being cost effective. Also, in the vast majority of cases the treatment can be discontinued once the problem has been dealt with, and of course this means that the patient stands to save even more, in that they won’t be faced with ongoing charges.

If you’re suffering right now from lower jaw pain or have had acute or chronic jaw pain episodes in the past, you may or may not have sought medical attention. Lower jaw pain can be caused by a few things including arthritis, fractures, dislocations, whiplash injuries and structural issues in the jaw that you were born with.

Do any of these symptoms sound like the kind of lower jaw pain you’re having? Clicking or popping jaw, sore jaw, jaw ache, locked jaw, clenching jaw or does it feel like a dislocated jaw? If so, your jaw and jaw pain can be treated and possibly cured and most of the time naturally. Of course removing the cause is the most important part once it’s recognized or diagnosed.

If you’re wondering what kind of jaw pain is linked with heart problems is the most important thing to remember about lower jaw pain is that it can be caused by heart problems and you want to make sure it isn’t related to your heart first of all. If it is you want to seek treatment immediately. You don’t want to wait around. This can be serious and a heart attack may be looming. If you have eliminated heart issues as a cause you can review the above list and see if any of that could be the cause.

If not the most common cause would be what people commonly call a TMJ problem. Pain in the lower jaw is usually due to temporomandibular joint or TMJ pain as it is called. These joints are located on both sides of the head just in front of your ears. There are other related problems in these areas but all fall under the category of TMJ disorders.

Most TMJ problems happen due to physical stress or sometimes emotional stress on the structures that support the joints. It can be one-sided or the lower jaw pain can be felt on both sides, to varying degrees of pain. The structures involved include the cartilage that connects the joint, muscles in the face, neck and jaw along with ligaments, nerves, blood vessels and teeth in the lower jaw area.

Some of the structural changes can happen if you have an overbite. Or get partial denture or full dentures that don’t change your overbite – which is hard to do. If you clench or grind your teeth at night or throughout the day this can pose serious stresses on the tempormandibualr joints (TMJ). This clenching causes a lot of stress on the jaw. Even poor posture can influence the muscles in the TMJ area. If you’re sitting at a computer all day long and not in an ergonomic fashion you may unwittingly put a lot of stress on the lower jaw and it may cause you pain then or later.

Other factors that might make TMJ symptoms worse are stress, poor diet, and lack of sleep. Complicating factors could be you develop headaches, toothaches or earaches caused by the lower jaw referring pain to those areas.

Once you have eliminated the possibility of heart-related issues and decided on whether your lower jaw pain is caused by, arthritis, fractures, structural problems, dislocations, whiplash or TMJ or a combination there are many natural approaches you can take.

You don’t have to suffer with TMJ or any other jaw pain. I suffered in the past too but I no longer have any TMJ or arthritis problems. Identifying the problem and being properly diagnosed by your doctor is the most important part. But try natural approaches to arthritis, TMJ and lower jaw pain treatment first efore resorting to invasive treatments.

For a nurse’s little-known pain relief secrets and methods, some your doctor doesn’t know, for how you can stop, diminish or control your pain and get pain relief for all types of acute or chronic pain go to http://www.PainReliefFast.com for treatments, therapies, techniques and natural pain relief.

A lot of people might be surprised to know that Huntington’s Disease can greatly affect a person’s oral health. The reason can be as simple as the uncontrollable jerky movement that makes brushing almost impossible for a patient to severe involuntary muscle spasms, especially on the face, that makes a dental operation or check-up doubly hard perform.

What is Huntington’s Disease in the first place? It is a type of hereditary, degenerating brain disorder that causes involuntary, rapid muscle movements such as jerking and twitching and also causes loss in cognitive process and memory which is often referred to as dementia. It was named after Dr. George Huntington, an American who first diagnosed and described the disease in 1872.

Dementia is typically detectable due to the patient’s loss of memory, frequent changes in personality and mental disorientation and confusion. Huntington’s Disease patients can also frequently feel restless and agitated.

The earliest symptoms of the disease are the uncontrollable muscle movements. Because these patients can have sudden involuntary twitching even in public, the disease has been a cause of embarrassment for these people. This is highly because of the fact that the public is, up to now, not yet properly aware and educated as to what Huntington’s Disease is and the implications it gives to people who have it.

The second set of symptoms is the mental type. These are often not quickly diagnosed by medical experts because the family of possible Huntington’s Disease patients can sometimes just consider these symptoms as ordinary individual mental shortcomings. These are often both short and long term memory loss, decline in abstract thinking and including psychomotor functions that essentially control the muscles.

Now, people with this disease are understandably at high risk of developing poor oral health. This is primarily due to the fact that they regularly suffer from uncontrollable muscle movements. These patients do not have full of their arms and hands and thus making self-brushing for their teeth virtually impossible. Adding to this are the instances where Huntington’s Disease patients can have muscle twitching and spasms on the face and thus losing control of facial movements. This effectively makes brushing even more difficult.

A visit to the doctor is also comprised due to these symptoms. A patient generally has trouble relaxing in the dentist’s chair. This is even for a simple and regular dental check up which a Huntington’s Disease patient needs due to poor dental hygiene. If an operation is necessary, the dentist will have to make use of equipment and props to keep the patient still so as to avoid any accidents while conducting the procedure.

A person suffering from this disease would require the assistance of another person to help him brush his teeth and even to floss. Hiring a caregiver would be a very wise choice. This is due to the fact that a caregiver is properly trained to assist people with such disabilities or disorders.

Huntington’s Disease patients already have too much problems to deal with that are directly related to the disease. Any other side effects of this disorder should then be lessened with the assistance of a family member of that of a health professional. Oral hygiene, while difficult to maintain for such patients, is still manageable with a little diligence and patience.
